Caravans soon became greatly outnumbered by mine vehicles and drivers with hi-vis vests. Massive road trains with up to 4 trailer loads barrelled along the highway. Stopped off at Fortescue River for a break, and enjoyed an interesting walk under the bridge. Beautiful Sturt Desert Peas and other wild flowers softened the red dirt and rocky outcrops. Onto Karratha, which has undergone a massive change since 2000 when we were last there. The City of Karratha has obviously done well from the mining boom, and while apparently in a downturn, there was still much activity around the place.
Met a couple of interesting young female German backpackers accessing electricity from the male toilets at Karratha’s Cattral Park to recharge their computers!?! Originally from Cologne in Germany, they bought a car in NSW over a year ago, picked up jobs here and there, and are nearly half way across Australia. They had just secured jobs at a Karratha hotel for the next three months, and were celebrating by cooking up a feast on the pavement outside the toilets while their computers were being charged. Go figure!
I wasn’t totally happy with the level of battery charge from Troy to Dora, so I called into Jolly Good Auto Electrics in Karratha LIA. They removed Dora’s ‘Smart Switch’ and installed a Redarc high performance battery charger, which improved Dora’s battery charge while I was driving Troy. It has worked a treat Kendal. Thanks for the speedy and professional service!
Point Samson is a small picturesque seaside town that has a great tavern that provides a great feed. Located right across from Point Samson Bay, we settled Troy and Dora into Port Samson Tavern and Caravan Park for the night ($50). Mark and Margie from Melbourne were on a road trip with their school aged kids, and Jan queried whether they were being home schooled. Margie was delighted with Jan’s educational background, and coerced her into checking 6 year old Eva’s trip journal.
