Point Samson to De Grey River

Headwinds again. Traveled only 283 kms @ 90kph @ 16.7 litres / 100 kms.

Drove from Point Samson to Yule River for lunch. Entered through gate as entered Munga Station. Saw jabiru, egrets, and black swans. Had to be careful on the quick sand river bed!

On to De Grey Rest Stop, a beautiful overnight stop located next to the De Grey Bridge and River. It was a great place to set up our bush camp, and we had the time to light a fire for a real bush BBQ and meet some interesting characters. Ron and Marita from Yunderup always spend a couple of weeks or so here at De Grey River coz their daughter works in Port Hedland. Ron’s a sprightly 82 years, and Marita’s not far behind him, and they travel the northwest in their car called Toby (cos it tows) and their van called ‘Mucka’ (cos they bought it from Muckinbudin). Mucka is a 1957 round-type van that is rugged as, according to Ron, and has travelled along Gibb river road. Ron’s very handy and has spent time refurbishing old Mucka and even invented a beaut fire grate made from old washing tub interior drum that fits neatly into Mucka.

John from Hastings in the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria showed me his electrical setup and solar panels. He had a neat trick where he created a cooler fridge section in his Engel Freezer by placing a beer carton wrapped in plastic as a divider between the two. It worked a treat, and cost a fraction of the price of an accessory that Engel charge for a similar result! John and his wife Avis traveled through Alice Springs, up the Top End, down the west coast to the southwest and then over the Nullabor back home.

TOP TIP – ideally, you should use a heavy duty electrical cable from your car battery to the rear of the car with an Anderson plug at the end. A heavy duty cable from your caravan battery to the front of the van would top it off, so you can connect the two Anderson plugs and have maximum voltage running from the car to the van.
